Day in the life of our Solutions Architect

When it comes to anything technical in Australia Juan’s your man. Based in Melbourne he helps us with our Azure’s to our API’s and everything in between. We interviewed him to see what’s been going on in his first few months at JAM and get some insight into our Melbourne techie…

So Juan, what does an average day look like to you at the moment?

I’m generally up quite early because I take over from the UK for Level 2 support, so I get up and do some exercises to wake me up, fill up my coffee and get on my laptop ready for any incidents that may come in! It’s a blessing that I get to work from home so I don’t need to travel to get into work, I just walk down the corridor.

I start my day by updating myself with any client-related matters, checking for any new tickets and emails. After the usual tasks, my days are pretty dynamic, I’m always doing something new. Whether it’s responding to new business proposals and putting out solution diagrams or assisting the UK team on out of hours jobs – every day brings with it new challenges and tasks.

If there’s a one-off quiet day I make use of my time wisely. I’m a continuous student and never want to stop learning so I make sure I upscale myself by enrolling in online courses to familiarise myself with various technologies that are relevant to the business. Recently I’ve been learning more about Linux and I’ve loved it.

Sounds busy! What is your favourite thing about working at JAM?

For me, there are two things that make working at JAM different from any other places I’ve worked before.

Firstly, it’s a real blessing I get to work from home. I have young kids and it means I get to spend as much time with them as possible throughout the day. I experience the benefit of the flexible working culture JAM promotes and it means I get to do things like the school run, and still get my work done. JAM’s great at facilitating this with most of our meetings done via video conferencing and leaders who see the benefit of flexible working hours that fit around us. It’s a great team to be a part of.

Secondly, I’m a life-long student and because we support a whole range of applications 24/7 and manage a variety of hosting environments I’m constantly having to learn and update my existing knowledge on new technologies and practices. Being given so many opportunities to learn and develop is invaluable to me and something that I love about working here!

That’s awesome! What’s been your most memorable highlight since starting with JAM?

Probably when one of our clients needed us to deliver a solution using Terraform. Terraform was a relatively new program to me and the client needed a solution ASAP. We had to onboard them really quickly, so I had to become a Terraform expert fast. However, it was great because I got to learn so much in a short space of time and work with the team in Singapore to get this solution successfully delivered.  Everything went to plan and the client was really happy so that was great.

And what about outside of work, what do you get up to on your days off?

Outside of work I’m generally pretty busy as I’ve got a young one and I’m the designated chauffeur for my family – but I love it! Every weekend we go on a road trip as a family, and I’m trying to get back into photography, so these provide a great opportunity to do that. This weekend we’re heading out for breakfast in Dalesford and for a walk around the farmers market.

Thanks Juan, enjoy the market!
